Back in December 2021, a year-long project in St. Andrew, Jamaica, came to a close. In collaboration with House of Marley, reforestation charity One Tree Planted successfully planted some 14,400 trees in the area. The nearby national park is one of the largest bird migratory sites in the Caribbean, hosting over 200 different species of bird every year.
Here’s a little more about how this project has made a difference to local people and wildlife.
Causes of deforestation in Jamaica
Agriculture expansion, natural disasters and severe weather, increased tourism and bauxite mining
Community benefits
Employment: Members of the community were employed for reforestation and maintenance.
Empowerment: The project gave local people the opportunity to earn wages while actively participating in the preservation of their natural heritage.
Ecological benefits
Improved the habitats of local flora and fauna, as well as Jamaica’s amphibian population and the Jamaican coney.
Provided ecosystem services such as watershed management for the provision of clean water.
Reduced overall risk of fire as the native vegetation is not flammable.
Stabilised soil and continues to prevent erosion.
